How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is the use of extremely fine stainless steel needles to improve many health conditions, and the biological mechanisms vary based on the specific condition, body region of needle insertion, and needle technique. Generally, for muscle recovery it can increase glutathione (the master antioxidant), and for visceral healing it can modulate the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems. Needle retention time is about 10-15 minutes. Patients receive 1-3 sets of needles per visit.

Acupuncture sessions designed just for you

Smokeless Moxibustion

Smokeless Moxibustion is the use of carbonized mugwort placed near the skin to warm cold areas of the body, affecting both shallow and deep tissues of the skin. This is typically performed while needles are retained.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a manual technique to retrain fascia (connective tissue) using sustained pressure while actively moving the specific body region. This is typically performed at the end of the treatment, after removing all needles.

Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)/Tapping may be performed during the visit and recommended as homework, with accompanying journal prompts, between sessions. Recommended for both mental and physical conditions that keep returning in different forms.

Cupping

Cupping is a therapy that, similar to acupuncture, promotes blood flow. It is particularly useful when there is pain across a broad area such as the upper and lower back. Anecdotally it can be especially effective in cases of chronic cough/phlegm, and in stubborn weight gain in which correct diet and exercise regimens alone have plateaued. Cupping has its origins across multiple cultures in both Europe and Asia.

Electro-acupuncture (EA)

Electro-acupuncture (EA) is the procedure in which clips are placed on the needles, and then a very small current (micro or milliamperes) runs between the needles, creating a tapping or vibrating sensation. The biological mechanisms vary based on the specific condition, body region of needle insertion, and the levels of current and frequency, which are carefully controlled by an FDA-approved device designed specifically for EA. The goal could be to harness a local effect, target a specific nerve or nerve plexus, target a specific spinal segment, or prompt the central nervous system (CNS) to release the body’s natural painkillers called endorphins.

Functional nutritional testing and supplements

Functional nutritional testing and supplements may be recommended for
complex chronic conditions involving multiple body regions, and when
food sensitivities are strongly suspected yet elusive. This involves
stool, blood, saliva, and/or urine testing. This would be an
additional cost and a minimum 3-6 month commitment.

Acupuncture Testimonials

“Lindsey is an amazing acupuncturist for so many reasons. She listened attentively to all of my concerns . She asked as many questions necessary to assure complete understanding  before determining what I needed. She made sure that needle placement was always comfortable for me. I had a lot of neck pain due to a childhood injury . After a few visits with her, my neck felt such relief from the chronic pressure I had for so many years. She also treated me for my chronic digestive issues. Acupuncture helped me experience both regular bowel movements and eliminate gas pain. Lindsey is a compassionate person who truly cares about her clients. Anyone who is fortunate enough to work with her will see what an asset she is in one’s life.”
